RGL Services recently completed a successful handheld hydrodemolition project at Pagoda Culvert in Swindon for BMD Group’s new UK contracting division. Using ultra-high-pressure (UHP) water jetting, the team removed deteriorated concrete while precisely exposing rebar for structural repairs in a challenging confined-space environment.

Project Overview
BMD Group engaged RGL following an enquiry for concrete removal works estimated at 1.5 – 2 m³ of material. Without a prior site survey, the quote assumed continuous, unrestricted access to the work face. RGL mobilised a 2-man UHP jetting team equipped to handle scabbling and hydrodemolition tasks efficiently.

Key Project Metrics:
- Estimated removal rate: 0.8 – 1 m³ per day.
- RGL supplied all fuel, equipment, potable water for jetting, and wastewater management solutions.
The works formed part of broader repairs to the culvert, aligning with Swindon Borough Council’s waterproofing and concrete repair initiatives in the area.
Turnkey Solutions Beyond Hydrodemolition
This project showcased RGL’s full range of support services, going well beyond core jetting capabilities:
- Acoustic mats installed around the working area reduced noise levels to the public by 20 dB.
- Full potable water supply provided on site.
- Wastewater containment via storage tanks, pumps, and vac tanker services, followed by compliant disposal.
These measures ensured minimal disruption in a sensitive urban location while maintaining the highest environmental and community standards.

Client Testimonial
Andy Gibbons, the Operations Director from BMD Group shared: “RGL stepped up and successfully completed our Works in Swindon quickly, safely and efficiently. Hopefully the start of a great relationship between RGL and BMD’s new UK contracting Division.”
This positive outcome highlights the strong collaborative approach BMD values in its expanding UK operations.
Why Handheld Hydrodemolition?
Handheld UHP lances delivered the precision needed in this confined culvert setting, where robotic options might have been limited. Advantages over traditional percussive methods include:
- No vibration-induced microcracking in surrounding concrete.
- No risk of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) to operators.
- Selective removal that cleanly exposes rebar without damage.
Looking Ahead
RGL Services, now part of Veolia UK, continues to build on over 40 years of water jetting innovation. We offer robotic and handheld hydrodemolition, along with comprehensive turnkey packages that include water supply, noise control, and waste management.
If you have upcoming concrete repair, removal, or hydrodemolition needs, especially in challenging or public-facing environments, contact our team to discuss how we can support your project.
Thank you to BMD Group for the opportunity and for the kind testimonial. We look forward to many more successful collaborations.
